This project is part of our Sport and Recreation Strategy, which is a 15-year road map for the future provision of sport, play, recreation and open space facilities across our City.

The site of the new mixed recreation space in Bennett Park between Stapleton Parade and King Street will be closed to the public during construction.

The rest of the park will remain open and accessible to the public.

Council is working with CONVIC, an award-winning youth space and skate park design company who have created more than 800 community spaces around the world.

Council has conducted site investigations which have determined there are varying ground conditions within the reserve, including areas of contamination. This has the potential to impact the overall safety of the site and how the new mixed recreation space settles in the reserve over time. Remediation of the site is required to ensure the reserve is in prime condition for the new mixed recreation space so it can be enjoyed for many years to come.

To ensure the ground conditions are optimal for the new mixed recreation space, the remediation works will include pre-loading the site with fill and managing any contamination on the site in line with the SafeWork NSW and Environment Protection Authority NSW requirements.

This fill needs time to settle in the reserve before Council can begin construction. This process can take up to 12 months.

Yes. All works will be carried out by licensed asbestos contractors and will be overseen by an independent SafeWork NSW licensed assessor.

All suitable controls will be implemented, and air monitoring will be undertaken to ensure that there are no adverse impacts on the surrounding residents and the community.
