The Kingsway is a road that travels through The Kingsway Playing Fields in St Marys and connects to Werrington Road and Charles Hackett Drive.

The Kingsway Playing Fields is a popular sporting venue, located in close proximity to St Marys Town Centre, making it a busy location for the community.

A shared path will provide a safe and accessible connection from The Kingsway Playing Fields to Ripples Leisure Centre, St Marys Senior High School, Werrington Road Education Precinct, St Marys Train Station, the future St Marys Metro Station, Werrington Train Station and Kingswood Train Station.

It will:

• Improve safety, comfort and accessibility for people walking or cycling from the St Marys Train Station to The Kingsway Playing Fields and a future shared path on Werrington Road.
• Better connectivity to The Kingsway Playing Fields and surrounding recreational facilities and schools.
• Ease traffic congestion by making it easier and more comfortable for people to access the precinct without a car.
• Boost the green canopy and improve the streetscape by planting additional trees to provide shade.
• Enable active lifestyles by providing infrastructure for residents to enjoy a walk, run or ride in the area.
• Improve road safety by constructing raised pedestrian crossing facilities, enabling accessible and safer crossings for all users.

Pedestrians and cyclists of all abilities and user groups will be able to safely access the precinct by using the shared path.

The proposed shared path is in line with the projects and routes identified in Council’s Penrith Accessible Trails Hierarchy Study (PATHS) Implementation Plan, Green Grid Strategy and St Marys Town Centre Master Plan, which have undergone community consultation.

Project notification letters for the shared path were sent to neighbouring properties and organisations in May 2026.

The community will have another chance to have their say on the shared path following the completion of the draft concept design, scheduled for late 2026.

The dedicated pedestrian and cyclist bridge will be located across South Creek, north of the existing road bridge. See map above for the proposed location.

The new bridge will be wide enough to safely accommodate people both walking and cycling.

A quietway (also called ‘safe active streets’ or ‘slow streets’) is an environment where people cycling or driving can use the same streets safely. This requires design elements and environmental cues that reduce car traffic speeds to help people riding feel safe and comfortable. A quietway is only suitable on low traffic local streets and laneways.

A quietway is proposed along Kalang Avenue, Camira Street and part of Carinya Avenue.

The removal of some shrubs and trees will be required to allow for the shared path and active transport bridge to meet the minimum design requirements.

Additional tree planting will be included in the design, ensuring that any tree loss will be replaced.

The project will include crossing facilities and kerb realignment at key locations to improve safety. The proposed quietway will include passing bays along Camira Street to improve traffic flow and access. This will require the removal of some kerbside parking at these locations to satisfy the relevant design standards and guidelines.

The proposed design of the facilities will ensure that any impacts on street parking are kept to a minimum.

The concept design of this project is funded by the NSW Government’s Get NSW active program helping to make walking and bike riding easier, safer and more convenient for people of all ages and abilities.

There is no funding secured yet for the detailed design or construction stages of the project. Council will be pursuing further opportunities for the delivery of the project as they become available.
