10 things you’ll be able to enjoy in Gipps Street

6 June 2024

The countdown is on! We’re getting closer to opening Penrith’s new 32-hectare sport and recreation precinct.

Council is working hard to deliver a truly special facility for our community, and we can’t wait to share it with you soon.

But in the meantime, read on to find out all the exciting things you’ll be able to enjoy when the Gipps Street Recreation Precinct opens later this year.

1. Spend a day at the park with the kids

Families and their children will love the large, fenced play areas available at Gipps Street.

A shaded water play area is a key feature of the design with all kinds of water fountains, jets and more, to help cool off on warmer days.

An inclusive and shaded children’s play area includes a wide variety of equipment including a flying fox, climbing tower, slides, accessible spinners and trampolines, balance beams, and much more.

There’s plenty of picnic tables, seats, and bins around these play areas, which are also close to toilets and car parking so you can stay and play for longer.

On the eastern side of the precinct, the nature play area will feature log swings, climbing net, maze challenge, cubby frames, boulder stacks, balancing equipment, picnic tables, and seating.

2.Take your fur baby out for a doggie play date

The new, fenced off leash dog park will be your pet’s new favourite spot!

There will be separate areas for large and small dogs, dog-friendly drinking fountains, bins, dog waste bag dispensers, trees, and shaded picnic tables to make the space more inviting.

3. Kick a ball around the floodlit sports fields

Gipps Street will include four full size rectangular grass fields, one junior size field, two full size ovals with synthetic wickets for cricket and AFL, and four lane district-level cricket practice facilities.

These facilities are available for everyone to enjoy, as well as formal use by sports groups for training and competitions.

There will be a central amenities building with canteen, change rooms, storage, and accessible toilet facilities, and ample parking for game days.

4. Head to the courts

Two floodlit netball courts will be available for casual or formal use, located next to the cricket practice facilities.

Two multi-sport courts and a half multi-sport court in the youth precinct will be perfect for casual after-school games.

5. Try out your best Tony Hawk moves

The gem of the youth precinct will be a floodlit skate park with beginner and intermediate bowls to cater to a range of abilities.

Or the 245-metre pump track might be more your style. It’s suitable for bikes, scooters, and skateboards, with rolling, banked turns and features a fun riding flow.

Don’t forget your helmet!

6. Hang out in the youth precinct

On top of the skate park and pump track, the youth precinct will have parkour equipment, outdoor table tennis, public artwork, a toilet block, seating, shelters, drinking fountains, and bike racks, making it a great space for young people to enjoy.

7. Pack a picnic

Gipps Street will be ideal for gatherings with family and friends, with plenty of picnic areas, BBQs, shelters, toilets, and shade.

8. Enjoy a walk or run

Residents and visitors will be able to get outside and enjoy a run or walk along the walking loop around the precinct. Lighting is being installed to improve safety.

9. Sweat it out with an outdoor workout

The outdoor fitness trail will include a range of cardio and strength equipment, with instructions on how to use each item properly.

The equipment is installed along a short trail in groups, so you can exercise within one ‘pod’ or work your way along the whole trail.

10. Soak up the mountain views and nature

Gipps Street has great views over to the Blue Mountains. Or slow down and meander along the nature trail on the eastern side of the precinct to take in the views towards South Creek.
