Coreen Avenue is located in Penrith and runs between Castlereagh Road and Parker Street. It forms a major east-west thoroughfare and services residential areas, an industrial precinct and access to Penrith Train Station.

The proposed shared path will be constructed on the southern side of Coreen Avenue between Castlereagh Road and Combewood Avenue.

There is currently no dedicated and accessible path for people to safely walk and cycle along Coreen Avenue between Castlereagh Road and Combewood Avenue.

The proposed shared path will provide a safe and continuous active transport connection between Castlereagh Road and Combewood Avenue, linking with existing shared path infrastructure along Coreen Avenue and Castlereagh Road. This will improve walking and cycling connectivity in the area and provide safer access to key destinations, including Penrith Train Station, the Thornton Estate, the Sydney International Regatta Centre, and surrounding industrial, recreational and residential areas.

It will:

• Improve safety and accessibility for people walking and cycling from Penrith, North Penrith and Cranebrook to Castlereagh Road, employees of surrounding industrial businesses travelling to Penrith Train Station and visitors travelling to the International Regatta Centre.
• Ease traffic congestion by making it easier and more comfortable for people to access the precinct without a car.
• Encourage active lifestyles by providing the infrastructure needed for residents, workers and visitors to enjoy a walk, run or ride in the area.

Pedestrians and cyclists of all abilities will be able to enjoy the benefits of the shared path facility.

Community consultation occurred in December 2023 with neighbouring properties for the now constructed shared path along the eastern end of Coreen Avenue between Combewood Avenue and Coombes Drive. The alignment of the proposed shared path between Castlereagh Road and Combewood Avenue was shown in the information provided during this consultation.

Consultation with the heritage property adjacent to the proposed shared path is ongoing.

The neighbouring properties will have another chance to have their say on the shared path during the detailed design process, scheduled for late 2026.

The removal of a number of shrubs and trees is currently proposed to facilitate the delivery of the shared path in accordance with the minimum design requirements. These potential vegetation impacts are being assessed as part of the Review of Environmental Factors (REF), which is currently being prepared to identify and minimise environmental impacts.

Street parking will not be impacted by the new shared path.

This project is funded by the NSW Government’s Get NSW active program helping to make walking and bike riding easier, safer and more convenient for people of all ages and abilities.

Construction is expected to commence in late 2026.
